What is a Affirmation – Simply change something positive - down there

Affirmations are an effective method for successfully implementing change. The self-affirming sentences help to turn wishes into reality. With them, you can positively influence your thoughts. What exactly affirmations are, how they work and which affirmations you use best are explained below.

Affirmation definition - What exactly does "affirmation" mean?

The original affirmation definition is simple: an affirmation is an affirmative statement. The term affirmation goes back to the Latin affirmatiō, which means “insurance” and “affirmation”.

As an affirmative statement, an affirmation can be almost anything. “I read a book” or “I like sausages”, for example. In order for an affirmation to become a helpful tool of mental training, however, this original affirmation definition must be supplemented by two further aspects, target focus, and repetition.

  • Target focus means that an affirmation is always associated with a goal, a clear direction.
  • Repetition means that the affirmation is not only formulated and presented once but that it is regularly repeated over a longer period of time.

This is the only way that affirmation can become a habit of thinking and change your life.

In this sense, the definition of affirmation in this article is:

An affirmation is a positively formulated statement that is regularly repeated over a longer period of time in order to achieve a certain goal.

The purpose of affirmations

The aim is to change our behavior and our feelings too permanently. Because thinking, feeling and acting are mutually connected and if I permanently change my thoughts through affirmations, then after a while my behavior changes and my feelings follow.

That doesn’t always work so straightforwardly, but it does it surprisingly often. Especially if you follow some rules that you will get to know in the course of this text.

How Affirmations Work

The average person thinks about 50,000 thoughts per day. You have probably never really wondered how they affect you – whether they are mainly positive or negative. Many behavioral patterns originate from this thought. They influence you consciously and unconsciously.

The world of thoughts is closely related to feelings and actions. So if it is possible to influence the thoughts, the chances are good to change feelings and actions. This can be to the advantage as well as to the disadvantage. If you have many negative thoughts, it will inevitably affect your feelings. This can lead to serious mental illness such as depression. Therefore, it is important to work on your life attitude and self-love.

Affirmations are an effective way to get a positive self-image and motivating thoughts.

Affirmations have a lot to do with visualization. By formulating a goal in your thoughts, you can better visualize it and make it more conscious. If you have a goal clearly in front of your eyes, it will appear more real and thus more directly tangible. If you remember your goals and wishes, again and again, you bring them into your present and change your attitude towards them in the long run. You are willing to work for your goals and are more positive towards them. You believe that you can realize your goals and desires.

How to develop an affirmation

Okay, so how do you develop an affirmation? It’s very simple:

Just formulate it as you would like it to be.

If you want to be slim, say “I am slim” or “I can allow myself to get a little slimmer every day until I reach my desired weight”.

Or if you want more prosperity, say to yourself: “I am prosperous” or “I enjoy prosperity and abundance in my life” or “I allow myself to earn more money”.

Or if you want a partner, then say to yourself: “I am open for a new partnership” or “I allow myself to become more and more attractive every day”.

You can also ask yourself: “Which way leads there?” and then formulate affirmations based on the answers. “I want to become slim and which way leads there?”

  • Answer #1: I eat light and healthy things
  • Answer #2: I exercise regularly.

Affirmation: “I can take the liberty of exercising regularly and eating a light and healthy diet. I am getting closer and closer to my dream weight. I can allow myself to be slim.”

As already written:

Just try out a little and choose a formulation that you feel comfortable with and don’t think too much about whether it’s right or wrong.

In case of doubt, this affirmation can help:

“I trust that I’m doing just the right thing with my affirmations.” 😊

How to use affirmations: Do's & Dont's

This works best when you perform the affirmations in the morning or evening because then your subconscious is most receptive. You can easily integrate affirmations into your everyday life, for example, you can recite them in the morning in front of the mirror or on your way to work. You can say them out loud or repeat them in your thoughts. Of course, you can also write them down if the recitation of an affirmation feels funny to you at first.

It is quite normal for you to feel uncomfortable in the beginning to put your goals and wishes into words and speak them out loud. The more often you use affirmations, the easier it will be for you to practice them. Once you feel their positive effects, you know that it has been worth overcoming your pig.

If you want to work on your self-love, you can increase the effect of the affirmations even more by applying them in front of the mirror. Try to hold your gaze in the mirror. If you avoid it, you probably don’t feel comfortable with your affirmation. On the one hand, this may be because you still have to work on your self-love, on the other hand, you may have problems to convince yourself of the truth of the affirmation. In this case, you should start smaller and change it a little so that you can believe it more easily:

DON’T: “I believe in my persuasive abilities”
DO: “Every day I believe more and more that I have abilities to convince.”

The second variant seems more credible at first since you still include the possibility of an increase here. You don’t assume that you have already achieved the maximum possible, that is, that you already believe in your abilities, but you convince yourself that you are increasing your belief in yourself from day to day.

It is important that you always formulate your affirmations positively. After all, you want to get a positive self-image and a positive result from your affirmations. However, if you formulate it negatively, you are only imagining the bad. This can lead to a negative change in your emotional world. With this you achieve exactly the opposite of what you actually wanted to achieve:

DON’T: “I’m not ugly.”
DO: “I am beautiful the way I am.”

The first variant only clarifies how you actually feel and remembers your negative self-image. But you want to change this picture. Therefore you should go back to the second variation because this sentence focuses on the goal – you want to accept yourself as you are. With your affirmation, you remember daily what you want to achieve – until you finally believe it.

The right emotional state for affirmations

If you associate an affirmation with positive feelings, it can unfold its effect faster and much more strongly.

The two best emotional states for affirmations are anticipation and gratitude.

To increase your anticipation, imagine how great your life will be once your affirmation becomes a reality.

  • What are you going to do?
  • Where will you be?
  • With whom are you there?

For some, it helps to imagine a picture or a short film of the target vision in addition to the affirmation. The more intense the anticipation you feel, the more your subconscious will be convinced that you will reach your goal. This, in turn, leads to the fact that you can use the potential in you more comprehensively for yourself. In order for your anticipation to strengthen the effect of the affirmation, however, it must be felt authentically. If you find it difficult to develop anticipation, it may be because you are too focused on your goals and need to achieve them before you allow yourself to be truly happy.

In such a case, it is probably better for you to awaken a sense of gratitude. To do this, you should first go through what you can be grateful for before your affirmations. Think of what you spend your free time with and what you enjoy. Thank you for your long-standing friendships and the support of your family. Thank for your friendly colleagues, an understanding boss or that you have an interesting job. Through a strong sense of gratitude, you act from a position of abundance and not for lack. You make it clear to your subconscious that everything you need to achieve your goals and be happy is already within you or your immediate environment. This keeps you loose and relaxed instead of cramping.

If you are a rather top-heavy person, it may not always be easy to generate positive emotions at the push of a button. Then you should at least switch off a little beforehand. You could, for example, listen to relaxing music beforehand. Meditation is also a very helpful technique to clear your head.

Affirmations: You should pay attention to that

You can use affirmations for all kinds of occasions. Almost everyone is receptive to affirmations. Their effectiveness, however, depends on whether the sentence you choose fits your goal. You should also be open to change. If you are not convinced that affirmations are effective, or if you are not even ready to solve your problem, a self-affirming sentence cannot do much.

To increase their effectiveness, you should also consciously take time to recite your affirmations. You can even make a small ritual out of it, combine it with a meditation or relaxation exercise. Speaking the sentences out loud improves their effectiveness. But they also work just as well if you write them down up to 30 times in a row. You could create a small diary in which you write down all your affirmations.

You should also not overtax yourself. Don’t get upset about too many affirmations at once, but rather concentrate on a few statements so that they can fully unfold their effectiveness. Think about which goals are most important to you, which problems you want to solve first, and choose the appropriate affirmations for these topics. Try out which statements you feel most comfortable with.

In summary, you should note that:

  • Find the right phrase for your goal
  • Being open to change
  • Form a ritual
  • Focus on a few statements
